What is a Driver's License and What are its Classes?
The official documents that allow you to legally drive within the borders of the country are called driver's licenses. However, driving license documents are also divided into some classes according to vehicle types. These license classes officially document what types of vehicles people are capable of driving. Anyone who wants to be able to legally drive any of the motor vehicles within the borders of the Republic of Turkey can have any of the 17 different driving license classes in total. These license classes provide drivers with driving authorization for vehicles in many different categories, from motor bikes to construction equipment. Any person who wants to be able to legally use a motor bike within the borders of the Republic of Turkey must be over the age of 16. However, this age limit increases to 24 for buses and minibuses. Let's continue our article by examining the driver's license classes more closely.
What are the License Classes?
The most widely used driver's license in our country is Class B driver's license. This type of driver's license is mandatory legal driver's licenses for those who want to drive cars and pickup trucks. On the other hand, licenses in category B1 belonging to class B are also required for the use of four-wheeled motorcycles. Class BE licenses, on the other hand, are legally mandatory license types for driving vans with trailers and cars with trailers. However, new driver's license types are classified according to the features of today's vehicles. In this context, A2 type licenses are obligatory for motorcycles not exceeding 35 kW, while other types of licenses in Class A are suitable for those exceeding 35 kW. A1 type licenses in this class are mandatory for motorcycles up to 125 cc. Class M licenses, on the other hand, are the appropriate type of license for people who want to legally use a motor bike within the borders of the Republic of Turkey.
If you want to drive a truck or tow truck weighing up to 7500 kilograms, you must have a C1 class license. For trucks and tow trucks with a capacity of up to 12000 kilograms, C1E type licenses belonging to the same license class are suitable. As you can understand from here, the letter C characterizes the class of vehicles such as trucks and tow trucks. CE refers to the trailer versions of these vehicles.
Class D1 licenses allow you to drive minibus type motor vehicles within the borders of the Republic of Turkey. However, drivers who want to drive a tractor will need an F-class driver's license. Drivers who want to use any construction equipment must have a G class license. Finally, the driver's license type, which was previously known as class H, allowing disabled people to drive has been abolished. Instead, it was decided to write the disability class on the driver's licenses to be obtained by disabled individuals.
How Many Years Are the Licenses Valid?
The validity period of the driver's licenses you will obtain within the borders of the Republic of Turkey varies between five and ten years, depending on their types. Accordingly, in addition to Class A and A1 and A2 type licenses belonging to this class, the validity period of licenses belonging to Class M can be up to 10 years. Likewise, the validity periods of B1 and BE type licenses, which are included in class B, and class F and G licenses are 10 years.
